Program Overview

The MA Social Justice Studies is an innovative, interdisciplinary program. The program allows students to pursue a 4 FCE course based degree or, with the approval of the Social Justice Studies Committee, complete a practicum, a creative project, or a research project in lieu of the final 1 FCE of coursework. The program prepares students to work, research and advocate towards a more socially just society which values equality, solidarity and human rights and recognizes the citizenship of each human being.

The program has three streams: an MA in Social Justice Studies, a Specialization in Social Justice Studies, and an MA in Social Justice Studies with a Specialization in Women's Studies. Within the MA they may choose the course stream, a research project stream, a creative project stream, or a practicum stream.

International Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships

Non-Canadian citizens who are entering Lakehead University from a high school or who are transferring from an international college or university will be considered for the Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships. The scholarship is available to the top international students applying to Lakehead University for 2026-2027.

Renewal is provided if a 90% average is achieved in each academic year. If a student's university academic average falls between 80.0% and 89.9%, the student will receive an amended scholarship valued at $7,500 CAD/year for each subsequent academic year for the remaining term of the scholarship.

Non-renewable, one-time only scholarship awarded in Year 1.
The maximum length of the scholarship term is 4 academic years or until the first degree is awarded, whichever occurs first. To be considered eligible for scholarship consideration, recipients must be entering years 1, 2, or 3 of a minimum 4-year undergraduate degree program. Recipients whose status changes and may be charged domestic fees will have their scholarship value reassessed to equate to the domestic entrance scholarship grid and regulations available at that time.

Merit-Based Scholarships – Postgraduate Programs

Lakehead University is offering merit-based scholarships for international students applying to selected postgraduate programs within the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.

Scholarships are awarded based on the converted admissions average calculated during the application assessment. The scholarship amount is determined at the time of issuance of the Letter of Acceptance (LOA). Once awarded, the scholarship value is final and cannot be revised.	These scholarships are merit-based and do not require a separate application. The award is granted as a one-time financial benefit to support tuition costs. Final eligibility and award value are subject to the university’s official admission evaluation process.
