Students in the International Year One: Science program will complete three terms of studies at WesternIC and, upon successful completion of the program, will progress to their second year of studies towards a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in the Faculty of Science at Western University.
 

Science Program Options

Computer Science Statistical and Actuarial Sciences
Explore a dynamic blend of traditional and cutting-edge disciplines with Western’s Computer Science program. Led by internationally recognized faculty, dive into the theoretical foundations of computer science while gaining hands-on experience in high-demand fields such as game design, cybersecurity, robotics and artificial intelligence. From software development to advanced studies in databases and cloud computing, you’ll acquire the skills to solve complex challenges at the forefront of technology. A degree from Western opens doors to diverse career opportunities in the ever-evolving world of computer science.

In Statistical and Actuarial Sciences, you will ollect, analyze and model data through mathematical and computing systems. The department at Western encourages collaboration between faculty and students and is home to one of the best equipped computing labs on campus! There are four different program options within this department:  

  • Actuarial Science 
  • Financial Modelling 
  • Applied Statistics 
  • Data Science



Science Program Structure

During the International Year One: Science program, you will study courses that introduce you to a wide range of disciplines. Below is a sample of the courses that you might take during the program:

  • Calculus II for the Mathematical and Physical Sciences  
  • Computer Science Fundamentals I

  • Psychology as a Natural Science 
  • Psychology as a Social Science  


Progression Requirements 

To progress into the second year of the Bachelor of Science in the Faculty of Science at Western University, with 10 one-term classes (5.0 courses) toward your degree upon successful completion of the International Year One: Science program if you meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum overall cumulative average of 60%
  • Completion of 10 one-term classes (5.0 courses) in the WesternIC International Year One: Science program 

Each program of study will have specific course requirements for progression to year two modules.  WesternIC Student Success Advisors will support your course planning to ensure you are meeting prerequisites to progress to your intended program of study.

Pathway to Bachelor of Science Major in Biology
Biology can be studied at the level of molecules, cells, organisms and populations. Students in the Biology Program can learn about a wide range of organisms, from microbes to humans, and a wide range of topics, including ecology, evolutionary biology, and plant and animal physiology. With a broad range module, you can take a few courses in many subjects, or narrow into one or two.

Minimum Level of Education Required: To be accepted into this program, applicants must have a Senior Secondary School Certificate or equivalent, including the following course(s):

  • 55% in Math 12
  • 55% in one Science 12 subject (Physics, Chemistry or Biology) is required.
