Gain the skills needed to help and support people facing challenging situations and events.

You will develop the attributes for professional social work practice in New Zealand as you engage in study integrating practice and community within the classroom. This programme is underpinned by a philosophy of bi-culturalism and anti-oppressive practice.

Our four year programme will take you from the fundamentals of professionalism, research skills, critical thinking and informed decision making, in your first year through to your second, third and fourth years when you will take these skills to an advanced level.

Each year has an integrated practice course where learning is linked to the practice environment. In the second, third and fourth years integrated practice includes significant time in social work agencies.

    Ara International Student Academic Scholarship

    The International Student Academic Scholarship recognises high-achieving international students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and a strong commitment to global engagement. This scholarship is designed for students who understand the value of internationalisation and are eager to contribute to the vibrant, inclusive culture of Ara. 

    Recipients of this scholarship will not only excel academically but also serve as ambassadors of cultural exchange—enriching our campus community through their perspectives, leadership, and enthusiasm for connecting across cultures.

    • Provide a personal statement, no more than 500 words that outlines the special circumstances that make you a candidate for this scholarship.? 

    • Provide two referee reports (one from a tutor) which comments on your ability to succeed in this programme and attest to your character. If you are a new international student and have not studied at Ara, please provide two Character Referee reports (at least one from a previous tutor). Please use the template provided below.? 

    Once you have submitted your application, please send your supporting documentation by the close off date (any documentation sent after the close off date will not be considered, unless prior permission sought) via email to: scholarships@ara.ac.nz?? 

    To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must: 

    • Be a new applicant for a 2026 programme. Scholarships are available for both Semester One (4 places) and Semester Two (3 places) intakes

    • Be an international student enrolling at Ara in a Level 7 or above Bachelor, Postgraduate, or Master’s programme 

    • Demonstrate excellent academic achievement in previous studies 

    • Show a genuine commitment to internationalization and contributing positively to the Ara community 

    • Meet all programme entry requirements and hold a valid, approved student visa to study in New Zealand
