Program Overview

Medical Sciences is concerned with how the human body works, both in health and illness.

Please note: This course is currently subject to revalidation*

With the goal of improving diagnosis, treatment, awareness, and prevention of disease, it is the science behind the knowledge applied through Medicine.

Grounded in modern medical practice, our BMedSci Medical Sciences course focuses on human physiology and anatomy, clinical diagnostics, infectious disease, and therapeutics, from molecular defects to gross anatomical changes.

With access to cutting-edge lab facilities, you’ll be taught by scientific and clinical staff from local hospitals, as well as academics at the forefront of research into the causes of cancer, autoimmune disease, antibiotic resistance, and a host of other healthcare issues.

Learning is very much hands-on, grounded in the real-world experiences of lecturers and driven by the latest scientific research. Our own expertise includes, among other things, investigation into kidney stones, leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, extended spectrum beta-lactamase, wound healing and pancreatic disease.

We also work closely with North West Cancer Research, the leading cancer charity for the North West and North Wales, whose staff not only teach on the course, but also support students undertaking dissertation research. In recent years, BMedSci students have undertaken work exploring PRAME expression in cancer to assess function in metastasis; or how the intestinal microbiome can act as an immune checkpoint for therapy response in melanoma patients. Others have instead chosen to carry out systematic reviews into topics such as uterine fibroids and their impact on fertility, deficits in genome stability and cancer treatments, CAR T cell therapy in B cell ALL patients or the role of PARP inhibitors for ovarian cancer.

The support you’ll gain from our close-knit learning community, broad curriculum, and our emphasis on practical experience and inquiry-based science provide a solid foundation for a future clinical or scientific career. On successfully completing this degree, competitive applications can be made for a limited number of places on our Graduate Entry Medicine Programme, as well as the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme delivered by Cardiff University (if prior pre-requisites are met).

*Courses validated by Bangor University are subject to review (approximately every 5 years) to ensure that the: course content remains relevant; curriculum reflects any changes prompted by developments in academic research; and that course quality continues to meet our high standards. When this process is undertaken the course will appear as being 'subject to revalidation'.
