Program Overview
This is a practical postgraduate course in Illustration, grounded in professional development and research. You’ll produce illustration projects in a collaborative and creative environment, working with and alongside students of Design, Visual Communication, Graphics, Textiles, as well as Photography and other Fine Art specialisms.
You’ll build a strong professional context for your practice and receive excellent academic and technical support from specialist practitioners, technical demonstrators, designers, researchers, theorists, professors and lecturers.
On successful completion of the course, your increased confidence and abilities will be clearly evident in the portfolio you’ve developed and you'll be ready to move into industry, or to continue to further study.
Working alongside other postgraduate students from Design, Textiles, Visual Communication, Graphics and Fine Art pathways, you’ll develop your own projects while undertaking practice-led research, theory and professional practice modules.
Specialist tutors and technicians will guide your progress, supporting you to create your own approach and make coherent and visually exciting Illustration outcomes.
You'll use subject-specific studios and workshops and have access to technical equipment, specialist software and computers. Our excellent art and design library provides access to printed books, ebooks, magazines and periodicals and a range of other resources through interlibrary loans. You will be supported by a dedicated art and design librarian and an enthusiastic team.
The MA Design (Illustration) programme culminates in a public exhibition at our Locskbrook Campus. Our aim is for you to graduate with a broad, informed outlook, a genuine and proven confidence in your abilities and the professional skills necessary to succeed in your chosen specialism.

Criteria
This scholarship is for candidates who are joining Bath Spa University in September, entering either:
- A three-year undergraduate programme
- A one-year postgraduate programme

How applications are judged

India Scholarship
Apply for up to £2,000 towards the cost of your first year fees in the 2026/27 academic year.
Bath Spa University works with a number of regional offices to support its work across the world, and number of scholarships are available to support applicants from India.
The following scholarships are available:
- £2,000 off tuition fees for the first year of study (10 scholarships available)
- £1,000 off tuition fees for the first year of study (20 scholarships available for the first 20 students who apply)
Criteria
The India Regional Office Scholarship is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate applicants.
- Postgraduate students must achieve at least 70% in their degree.
- Undergraduate students must achieve at least 70% overall in their 12th grade, for example, A-Levels.
Applicants must first apply for their programme of study direct to Bath Spa University through our official University representative in India, and be processed through Bath Spa University India.
Applicants can be from outside India, but must be processed through the regional office in India.
